Rules for Trials of Position-Possession
Nothing is respected in W£ more
than skill. But skill is not everything. Those who aspire for leadership positions
must have the necessary leadership skills. For that reason, the following
rules have been put in place to ensure that those who hold ranks truly deserve
them.
1. Ranks must be fought for unless conferred by the Commanding Officer via
Battlefield Commissions.
2. Ranks must be fought for or defended in trials of position-possession
witnessed by a member of the Command Lance.
3. Challenges can only be made by a lower ranking member to a member who
is immediately superior to him or her, and that challenge can only be made
against an immediate superior of the same platoon or sub-unit. No leapfrogging
is permissible. Challenges can only be leveled against a superior of a different
unit upon the approval of the Commanding Officer.
4. Challenges must be accepted within a period of 4 weeks and a trial of
position-possession must take place within 1 week after the challenge is accepted,
unless determined otherwise by the Commanding Officer. Failure to comply
will result in winning by forfeiture, whereupon the challenger will be promoted
and the challenged demoted accordingly.
5. Those of the same rank may challenge each other for a higher rank provided
that one is vacant. The winner will be promoted accordingly, whereas the vanquished
will retain his or her rank.
6. Those who wish to vie for Command Lance positions must work their way
up to platoon commander status and then to any vacant rank in Command Lance.
Exception is made for Company Sergeant, in that the rank is conferred upon
by the Commanding Officer to someone deemed suitable. Exception is also made
for other officers deemed worthy of Command Lance status by the Comanding
Officer, in which event, his or her working up through the ranks does not
cause others to be demoted in the process.
7. The Company Sergeant may be promoted to a higher rank by challenging
a superior ranking officer of any platoon, but his or her victory does not
result in the demotion of those officers.
8. Any future variations to the Trial of Position-Possession rules will
be determined by the Commanding Officer after consulting members of the Command
Lance, but the decision of the Commanding Officer is final. Those who are
not happy with any changes may challenge the Commanding Officer to a trial
of refusal, whereupon the Commanding Officer has the right to select two proxies
to fight on his or her behalf before personally answering the challenge.
9. The absence of written rules regarding other related matters does not
indicate the absence of rules. The Commanding Officer, aided by other members
of the Command Lance, will come out with suitable rules from time to time
to clarify matters.
